Friends, Skills, and Global Adventures: Your Guide to Student Clubs

Discover how Hudson's student-led clubs span creativity, academics, leadership, and wellbeing, giving each student a place to grow in a truly global environment.

With more than 20 clubs in our student community, there is a club for every Hudson Global Scholars student! This means that students can find their place, share their voice, and grow in a truly global environment. This article offers a closer look at the student club experience in the Hudson Global Scholars Community, featuring insights from Student Community Manager Kim Kontos and students who have experienced firsthand how clubs build connection, confidence, and global friendships.

What Makes Hudson Global Scholars Clubs Valuable?

Hudson Global Scholars clubs help students build friendships, develop communication and leadership skills, and engage with peers worldwide. These experiences go beyond academics, creating a sense of belonging and helping students grow in confidence even with busy schedules and across time zones.

Why Clubs Matter in a Global Learning Community

At Hudson Global Scholars, clubs aren’t just extracurricular activities. They are student-led places where participants can:

  • Build cross-cultural friendships
  • Practice conversational English in authentic social settings with peers
  • Develop leadership and communication skills
  • Explore personal interests beyond the classroom

Through live meetings, group chats, and collaborative activities, students connect in meaningful ways during an ongoing, global social experience. Emma, a Student Ambassador from Columbia who leads the Dance and Connect club describes this connection:

“What they like, I also like, so we can connect, and it doesn't matter where they come from or if they don't speak the same language. We all connect because of our same passion.”

Student-Led by Design: Clubs Powered by Students

What sets Hudson Global Scholars clubs apart is that they are 100% student led. This peer-led model creates a more authentic experience. Members of the Student Ambassador program take ownership of the experience. These ambassadors propose new clubs based on their passions, create project plans, and lead activities. For Kim Kontos, this is what sets students’ clubs apart and makes them so worthwhile. “The best part,” she says, “is they’re run by the students themselves.” She meets with student leaders regularly to reflect, collaborate, and improve their clubs if they need support and guidance. But ultimately, the ambassadors are the ones who organize discussions, post polls, write articles, and plan events—keeping the clubs active and relevant.

All-the-Time, Everywhere Connection

Because students are located all around the world, club chats are active at all hours. Conversations in group chats evolve naturally depending on who is online, creating an organic and dynamic environment. Live moments spark conversation and connection.

But even if they’re not online, students can catch up on discussions and respond to topics anytime, making it easy to stay connected regardless of time zone. Opportunities to attend live events take time zones into consideration, so students have options to participate when it works for them.

Why Students Recommend Joining a Club

Joining a Hudson Global Scholars club is fun! It’s also a powerful way to grow. Students build confidence, explore interests, and form globe-spanning friendships that span the globe in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

Clubs have helped Hudson Global Scholars students grow in meaningful ways:

  • Social: Making friends across cultures and building lasting global connections
  • Academic: Applying classroom learning and English skills in real-world conversations with peers
  • Personal Growth: Building confidence, independence, and leadership skills

Lamis, a Sudanese Student in Turkiye, was first drawn to student clubs when she saw the language offerings.

“I always wanted to learn a new language. I wanted to learn more than 6 languages if I could. The language clubs were so nice.”

Now serving as a Student Ambassador, Lamis initiated and runs the Arabic chat in the Language Club. Lamis hopes to inspire other students the way she was inspired and supported in these early club experiences.

Real Connections Across Cultures

One of the most meaningful parts of the club experience is the opportunity to connect with students from different countries and cultures. Students often discover shared interests (like music, movies, or hobbies) while also learning how to communicate respectfully across cultures. Through these interactions, they develop important life skills, including:

  • Communicating in a second language in a natural, conversational way
  • Being aware of tone, audience, and cultural differences
  • Practicing reflection before responding

The most powerful part of the club experience is often found in the unexpected moments of connection. Programs like the Best Buddy Club pair students as modern-day pen pals, creating deeper, ongoing connections and sometimes forever friendships.

Recently, students in the Cooking and Baking Club joined a live session from their own kitchens around the world. Even without identical ingredients—or even when a blender broke mid-session—they laughed, adapted, and created something together. Family members joined in, and conversations flowed. This shared experience brought people together across cultures and time zones. These are the kinds of moments that turn participation into belonging.img-HGS-Brigadeiro-cooking-class-2026-04-22
